Parodontal Treatment
What is Periodontitis?
Periodontitis, often mistakenly referred to as “periodontosis,” is an infection caused by bacteria that attacks the periodontium through chronic inflammation and destroys the structures. This includes all areas of the oral cavity responsible for firmly anchoring the tooth, such as the gums, the jawbone, and specialized ligaments that run between the root surface and the bone. It is considered one of the most common infectious diseases of the oral cavity. The main cause of periodontitis is bacterial dental plaque (plaque), but genetic predisposition and lifestyle can also influence the course and severity of the disease. The severity of the inflammation depends on the type of bacteria and the body’s own immune response. The bacteria can penetrate under the gums and eventually attack the tooth anchorage in such a way that teeth become loose and can lead to tooth loss.
What are the causes of periodontitis?
The following factors influence periodontitis:
- Genetic predisposition
- Smoking
- Increased occurrence of certain bacteria in the oral cavity
- Diabetes
- Stress
- Certain medications, such as blood pressure-lowering drugs
How is periodontitis treated?
Periodontitis treatment is multi-stage and complex and may require surgical and medical treatment measures. Before we begin treatment in our practice, we provide comprehensive information about the individual treatment steps.
The goal of therapy is to stop the progression of the disease. The first step is achieving very good oral hygiene at home and professional teeth cleaning in the dental office.
After periodontal treatment, it is important to strengthen your immune system to prevent a recurrence of the disease.
Periodontitis is a chronic condition. Those who have been affected and treated must practice lifelong “aftercare.”
We will help you with this.
